The Livesey Museum for Children

Welcome to the unofficial website of London's fully hands-on, free children's museum.

THE LIVESEY MUSEUM FOR CHILDREN WAS
CLOSED DOWN BY SOUTHWARK COUNCIL IN FEBRUARY 2008.

Though council leader Nick Stanton denied it at the time, the council planned to auction off the historic building. Council leaders decided to close the museum without consultation or warning in order to minimise opportunities for local people to act to save the museum.

Many Southwark councillors, despite knowing the good work the museum had done, began publicly belittling the museum's reputation. The head of Southwark's culture department made false statements about the museum's visitor figures in order to smooth the way to the museum's closure.

By the time the council was forced to backtrack when it was made clear that the building was not its to sell, the museum had already been closed. This closure was a completely unnecessary act of cultural vandalism, proving the emptiness of Southwark Council's claims to care about the Old Kent Road area.

Now Southwark Council has rejected an exciting proposal to allow the building to reopen as an interactive museum for the whole community. This has apparently been done largely out of spite. The museum's last chance lies with the Charity Commission.

This site will continue to document the work of the Livesey Museum for Children from its opening by poet laureate Sir John Betjeman in 1974 to its abrupt closure by greedy councillors in 2008.

This site will also give news of what is happening to the historic building, given to the people of Peckham by Sir George Livesey in 1890.

THE BUILDING IS STILL STANDING EMPTY AND IS VISIBLY FALLING INTO DISREPAIR.
