Livesey Museum News and Events

THE LIVESEY MUSEUM FOR CHILDREN HAS BEEN
CLOSED DOWN BY SOUTHWARK COUNCIL.

THE MUSEUM WAS RUN ON A MINIMAL BUDGET AND PROVIDED FANTASTIC VALUE FOR MONEY TO LOCAL PEOPLE AND SCHOOLS, AS WELL AS ALL ITS FRIENDS AROUND THE UK AND INTERNATIONALLY.

WHAT DO SOUTHWARK COUNCIL WANT TO DO WITH THE BUILDING? IT WAS GIVEN TO THE PEOPLE OF PECKHAM BY SIR GEORGE LIVESEY IN 1890. THE LIVESEY MUSEUM FOR CHILDREN WAS A POPULAR AND SUCCESSFUL USE OF THE BUILDING FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.

The museum was closed down less than 5 weeks after the news first broke that it was even under threat. Southwark Council have declared there are no specific plans to sell the building off quickly - but why did the museum have to be closed without consultation and with no alternative plan for the museum even being considered?

MEANWHILE FRIENDS OF THE LIVESEY ARE STILL TRYING TO SECURE
A FUTURE FOR THE MUSEUM.

THE BUILDING IS STANDING EMPTY.

THE MUSEUM IS NOT GONE YET AND YOU CAN STILL HELP!

PLEASE SHOW THAT YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE MUSEUM FOR CHILDREN - CONTINUE TO LET YOUR SOUTHWARK LOCAL COUNCILLORS AND MP'S AND KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE CLOSURE OF THE MUSEUM AND THE ABANDONMENT OF THE HISTORIC BUILDING.

Throne of Weapons / Dove of Peace
As part of its Partnership UK scheme, the British Museum's ongoing tour of the Throne of Weapons was on display at the Livesey Museum in 2006. Our Throne of Weapons workshops produced two scupltures: a Throne of Toy Weapons and a Dove of Peace. The Dove of Peace sculpture has now been handed into 10 Downing Street as part of a Christian Aid petition highlighting the danger of the arms trade.

A Recycled Greenhouse

We have been building a greenhouse using old plastic bottles for our courtyard, with the help of SCI (Sustainable Communites Initiatives) and St. Francis Primary School. Please come to see its progress - and bring an old 2 litre plastic bottle if you'd like to contribute!

One Step Beyond
laying the front path

"One Step Beyond"

This project created a new front path for the museum. Working with artist Randy Klein, local families with autistic children designed and cast a set of ceramic paving slabs.
